Brixham set to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Brixham is preparing to deliver 40 free public events, activities, displays and gatherings to mark the 70 years reign of HM the Queen. The occasion is over 5 days from 1st to 5th June and incorporates the double Bank Holiday on Thursday 2nd June and Friday 3rd June . This creates a long weekend of celebrations including free public films, concerts, dancing, music, marching band, parades, etc.
Some of the many community groups involved include the Brixham Museum, Brixham Library, Shoalstone Pool, Royal British Legion, local churches, Women’s Institute, Chamber of Commerce, Middle Street Traders and Brixham Town Council. The event is being co-ordinated by Brixham Future CIC.
One of the main organisers, John Rudden ,says:-
”We want the events to be both educational and entertaining with something for everyone to enjoy. On Thursday 2nd June at 8 pm there will be the formal lighting of the Brixham Beacon at Shoalstone Pool Green as part of national celebrations.
On Friday 3rd June we will be holding a Parade of Community Groups assembling at the ‘Man and Boy’ statue on the Southern quayside at 10am and marching from 10:30am into the Town Square via Fore Street for 30 minutes service and community sing-a-long until 12 noon.
Then on Saturday and Sunday there are varied activities and attractions in our town to mark the occasion with a final service at All Saints Church from 7pm on the Sunday.”
The theme of the event is ‘Back to the 1950s’ which marked the emergence of youth culture and the era of ‘Rock and Roll’. John Brennan, Chair of Brixham Future, says:-
“The Brixham Library and our local museum will be hosting exhibitions which reflect the history of the era and our area. We are holding a fashion parade in the Town Square on Friday at 2pm and everyone is welcome to participate. We are looking forward to seeing the Elvis Presley ‘lookalikes’! Everyone is encouraged to dress up for the occasion.”
