Brixham Future is proud to announce the completion of 3 out of 6 of the new murals it had planned to deliver in the early months of 2024. The remaining three murals are to be completed through late Summer and Autumn.
We were unfortunately delayed by severe rain early in the year and intermittent rain since. It left several walls soaking and unfit to be painted on. The poor weather also impacted upon our artists schedule and workload with several projects having been delayed.
We were delighted with the community reaction to our consultation exercise earlier in the year, which resulted in over 100 responses! We reviewed each proposed mural in light of peoples comments and some were re-designed as a result.
We can announce that work will commence on our fourth mural in September (subject to the weather). This will be followed by one on Apter Hill and a large scale Nelson Mural on Union Lane. We believe that our series of murals deliver further improvements to the townscape.
A board spokes person states:
We are committed to delivering small scale, quick win, low-const projects that both enhance the town and highlights our cultural heritage for both residents and visitors to enjoy alike. The basic idea is to paint extracts of poetry or literature relevant to Brixham upon vacant walls to create a new trail for people to ponder and enjoy.
Many of the County’s greatest poets and literature writers wrong about the sea and its people. What better place to pay tribute to them and Brixham by highlighting such connections?
In delivering this project we put 5 proposed designs up for public consultation (December 12th 2023 to February 1st 2024) to hear what people thought. For example, which ones are the favourite? Are there any that people strongly dislike?
`Sea Fever` by John Mansfield and `Rime of the Ancient Mariner` by Samuel Taylor Coleridge are among the poems identified for inclusion. Many of the verses and literature extracts will be familiar to local people and visitors. The trail will add to the uniqueness of Brixham. We also hope to incorporate words from local people associated with both our rural and sea scape heritage in our future murals.
